SHARE-RV (further information)
The survey data
The Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE) is a multidisciplinary and cross-national panel database of micro data on health, socio-economic status and social and family networks of more than 123,000 individuals (approximately 293,000 interviews) from 20 European countries and Israel aged 50 or older. The data are available to the entire research community free of charge. SHARE responds to a Communication by the European Commission calling to "examine the possibility of establishing, in co-operation with Member States, a European Longitudinal Ageing Survey". SHARE has become a major pillar of the European Research Area, selected as one of the projects to be implemented in the European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures (ESFRI) in 2006 and given a new legal status as the first ever European Research Infrastructure Consortium (SHARE-ERIC) in March 2011. SHARE is centrally coordinated by Prof. Axel Börsch-Supan, Ph.D. at the Munich Center for the Economics of Aging (MEA), Max Planck Institute for Social Law and Social Policy.

The administrative data
The Research Data Center of the German Pension Insurance provides complementary longitudinal data in the format of the VSKT insurance account random sample, and the RTBN cross-sectional data set (policy holder pension portfolio):
- The data in the format of the VSKT includes demographic variables and some pension-related variable, plus a number of modules on the social income situation (SES). This covers socially insured employees and statutory insured pensioners between the ages of 14 and 65. However, it does not include state employees or the self-employed.
- The RTBN provides information on pensioners, including for example when the pension started, and the type of pension.
Access to the data
The data can only be used for research purposes. The data is provided as scientific-use-files in German and English for the software-packages Stata and SPSS. Note that for reasons of data privacy, the administrative records of the German Pension Insurance and the SHARE data have to be ordered separately but the data can easily be linked by the users. The SHARE data can be downloaded by registered users on the SHARE homepage; while the administrative data can be ordered and is provided on compact disc.
